TL;DR: ChatGPT now shows sponsored ads under its answers, and local service businesses can buy them directly. You can target by state, city, metro area or ZIP code, the minimum budget is $25 a day, and OpenAI suggests starting bids of $3 to $5 per click. Ads appear when a homeowner describes a problem that matches your service, for example a furnace making a clicking noise or a roof leaking after a storm. Early results are promising for lead generation (Angi cut its cost per lead by 34%), but nobody has published independent numbers for a single contractor yet, so treat it as a test, not a replacement for Google.
This guide uses OpenAI’s own Ads Manager help center (checked October 18, 2026), the home services case study OpenAI published with Angi, and the public announcements from Angi and Thumbtack about their ChatGPT apps. If you sell to businesses rather than homeowners, read our ChatGPT Ads guide for B2B SaaS instead.
In this guide: how ChatGPT Ads work, the three ways homeowners can reach you inside ChatGPT, how local targeting works, what it costs, real results so far, a setup checklist for contractors, example targeting by trade, and how it compares with Google Ads and Local Services Ads.
What ChatGPT Ads are and who sees them
A ChatGPT ad is a labeled “sponsored” card shown below ChatGPT’s answer. It has your business name, logo, a short title and description, an image and a link to your landing page, according to OpenAI’s advertiser help center. This is the example OpenAI itself uses on its advertiser site, and it happens to be a home improvement question:

- You cannot buy your way into the answer. OpenAI’s ads principles say ads do not change what ChatGPT recommends. Being named inside the answer itself depends on your organic AI visibility, which is a separate job.
- Only Free and Go users see ads. People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education plans never see them, and ads are not shown to users under 18.
- You never see the conversation. Advertisers get totals (impressions, clicks, conversions), not chat text or personal details.
Where ads run
Ads started in the US in February 2026, then expanded to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, followed by the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea in August and parts of Europe after that. Self-serve buying through Ads Manager opened in May 2026 (OpenAI). One practical limit for small businesses: a new self-serve account may only advertise in its home country until OpenAI verifies the business and sees some spend history.
Three ways a homeowner can reach you inside ChatGPT
Ads are only one of three routes, and contractors should know all three before spending money.

| Route | How it works | Who controls the lead | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Ads | Your ad shows under answers that match your service and area. The click goes to your own landing page. | You do. The lead is yours alone. | Auction, from $25 a day |
| Marketplace apps in ChatGPT | Angi launched an app inside ChatGPT on March 4, 2026. A homeowner asks a question, gets advice and local pro suggestions, and continues the quote on Angi. Thumbtack announced a similar app in October 2025. | The marketplace. Leads are often shared with other pros. | The marketplace’s own lead or membership fees |
| Organic recommendations | ChatGPT names businesses in its answer based on what it finds about them online: reviews, directories, your website and mentions. Our guide to showing up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers covers how. | You do. | No click cost, but it takes ongoing work |
Angi also buys ChatGPT Ads for its own categories, so in some trades you may be bidding against the marketplace you list on. That is one more reason to own your landing pages and your lead flow.
How targeting works for a local business
If you have only run Google Ads, two things work differently here: there are no keywords, and location is set separately from everything else.

Location: state, city, metro or ZIP
OpenAI’s campaign setup guide (updated October 2026) says that in addition to countries, campaigns can target “states or regions, cities, markets, and postal codes where available.” Some guides published earlier in 2026 say ChatGPT Ads only target whole countries. That is no longer the case for regular campaigns; country-only targeting now applies to product-feed (shopping) campaigns. For a contractor, this means you can draw your real service area instead of paying for clicks from across the country.
Context hints instead of keywords
Each ad group gets a few “context hints”: plain sentences that describe what you offer, who it helps and when. OpenAI’s context hints guide actually uses a local plumber as its example:
“After-hours residential plumbing in [city], with an $89 service-call fee for urgent repairs”
The same guide warns that hints describe your business; they do not control delivery. “Residential plumbing services available in Chicago” is a good hint. “Show this ad only to people in Chicago” is not, because hints “cannot enforce geographic limits.” Use the location setting for that. It also notes that “wanting to reach a customer group does not, by itself, make your offering relevant,” so write hints about the real job you do, not about who you wish would call.
Example context hints by trade
These are our illustrative examples in OpenAI’s style. Replace the details with your real services, prices and area:
| Trade | Example context hint |
|---|---|
| HVAC | “Same-day AC repair for homeowners in Phoenix when the system stops cooling in summer heat” |
| HVAC | “Furnace replacement quotes for older gas furnaces in Columbus, with financing options” |
| Plumbing | “Emergency water heater replacement in Dallas homes, same-day installation available” |
| Roofing | “Roof leak inspection after hail or wind storms in Denver, with help filing insurance claims” |
| Landscaping | “Spring lawn cleanup and mulching for homeowners in suburban Atlanta” |
| Electrical | “Level 2 EV charger installation for homeowners in San Diego, including panel checks” |
| Pest control | “Termite inspection and treatment for older homes in Tampa” |
What ChatGPT Ads cost
- Minimum budget: $25 a day for US-dollar accounts. The daily budget works as a weekly average: one day can spend up to twice the daily amount, but a Sunday to Saturday week stays within seven times it.
- Bids: OpenAI’s help center suggests a starting maximum of $3 to $5 per click. The auction is “relevance-weighted,” so a more relevant ad can win over a higher bid.
- A realistic first test at the minimum is about $750 a month for one campaign. That is enough to learn whether homeowners click and call, not enough to judge cost per booked job.
| What you pay for | Billing | Good for a contractor when |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Rarely. Brand awareness in a new area at most |
| Clicks | Per click (CPC) | Your first month, to learn which services get clicks |
| Conversions, billed per click (oCPC) | Per click, optimized for one lead event | You track form leads or booked calls reliably and get several a week |
| Conversions, billed per 1,000 views (oCPM) | Per 1,000 impressions | Bigger budgets; it also counts people who saw the ad and came back later |
Two settings cannot be changed after launch: the campaign objective and, on conversion campaigns, the conversion event. Get tracking right before you choose.
What the results look like so far
The honest answer: there is one published home services result, and it comes from a large marketplace, not a local contractor.

Our expectation, until contractor data proves it either way: emergency and high-ticket services where homeowners ask for advice first (AC repair, water heaters, roof leaks, remodels) should do better than low-ticket recurring services. That is a hypothesis to test, not a published result.
Setup checklist for contractors

oppref click parameter through any redirects, and put a call tracking number on the landing page so phone calls from ChatGPT are counted. For most contractors, calls are most of the leads.A 30-day test plan for an HVAC or plumbing company
Here is how we would set up a first test for a typical HVAC or plumbing company that already runs Google Ads and Local Services Ads.
Measure booked jobs, not clicks

Track the whole chain: spend, clicks, qualified calls (we count calls over 60 seconds) and form leads, booked appointments, completed jobs, revenue. Compare cost per booked job with the same number from your Google Ads and LSA for the same 30 days.
| After 30 days | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per booked job within about 1.5x of Google or LSA | Worth continuing | Add a second service, then test a conversion objective |
| Booked jobs, but at 2x or more | The channel reaches people, the setup is off | Change the landing page, offer or hints, run 30 more days |
| Clicks but almost no qualified calls | Wrong intent or wrong page | Rewrite hints around a specific problem, or stop |
| Very few impressions | Not enough ChatGPT ad volume in your area yet | Widen the area slightly or pause and recheck in a few months |
These thresholds are our starting suggestions, not platform benchmarks. OpenAI has not published any for home services. Adjust them to your own job values and margins.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads vs Local Services Ads
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads | Google Local Services Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When it reaches the homeowner | While they describe a problem or compare options | When they search for a service | When they search for a service, at the top of results |
| How you target | Context hints + location | Keywords + location | Service categories + location |
| You pay | Per click or impression | Per click | Per lead |
| Lead ownership | Yours | Yours | Yours, through Google’s lead inbox |
| Track record | New, few published results | Years of benchmark data | Years of benchmark data |
| Best use | A test budget next to proven channels | Core demand capture | Core demand capture for eligible trades |
For most home service businesses, ChatGPT Ads belong next to Google, not instead of it. Someone typing “emergency plumber near me” is ready to call. Someone asking ChatGPT “is it worth repairing a 15-year-old water heater” is earlier in the decision. An ad there works if it offers a clear next step, like a free replacement quote.
Should your home service business test ChatGPT Ads now?
| Test now if… | Wait if… |
|---|---|
| You already run profitable Google Ads or LSA | Your Google campaigns are not profitable yet |
| You track calls and form leads by source | You cannot tell which channel a lead came from |
| You offer emergency or high-ticket services | You mainly sell low-ticket recurring services |
| You can spend about $750 a month to learn | Every dollar has to pay back this month |
| You have service pages for each service and area | All traffic goes to your homepage |
If you are on the “wait” side, the better first step is usually showing up in ChatGPT’s answers organically, through reviews, directory listings and clear service pages. We cover that in our AI SEO and GEO services.
The bottom line
ChatGPT Ads are now open to local businesses, with real location targeting and a low entry price. Many homeowners now start by describing a problem to ChatGPT before they know who to call, and that is the moment these ads reach. The evidence is still thin: one marketplace case study and no independent contractor tests yet. Run it as a measured test, with tracked calls, one ad group per service and a clear budget limit, next to the Google campaigns that already bring you jobs.
